Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of drugs or alcohol. Substance abuse can involve the use of legal or illegal drugs, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and recreational drugs. Commonly abused substances include alcohol, nicotine, opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, and marijuana. It’s important to note that substance abuse is different from addiction, although the two are related. Substance abuse is the pattern of harmful or hazardous use of drugs or alcohol, while addiction is a chronic brain disease characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite negative consequences. Not everyone who abuses drugs or alcohol will develop an addiction, but substance abuse can increase the risk of addiction.
It’s common for individuals struggling with substance abuse to have co-occurring mental health conditions. At Team Wellness Center, we recognize the connection between substance abuse and mental illness and offer integrated treatment programs that address both simultaneously. We begin with a comprehensive assessment that includes a thorough evaluation of the member’s physical and mental health. This assessment is used to determine the level of addiction and any other health issues and develop a recovery-focused plan of care that respects and promotes independence and responsibility. We coordinate care to ensure members have access to prevention, primary care, and additional specialty healthcare services. To control symptoms of mental illness, we assist members with individual, group, and family therapy, pharmacotherapy, and other supportive services. The goal of our substance abuse program is to provide a quality array of comprehensive services for members from the moment they step into one of our clinics, to stabilization and into maintenance.
Team Wellness Center’s Suboxone Clinic combines the use of Suboxone with behavioral therapy to treat and relieve symptoms of opioid dependence and withdrawal.
Team Wellness Center provides substance abuse treatment to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. For those without insurance, we offer a sliding fee scale based on income.
